Proposed 182nd/Powell Wal-Mart SupercenterWal-Mart is proposing building a Supercenter on the SE corner of Powell and 182nd. This is the location of the QFC store that closed shortly after opening (across from Safeway). The store would include underground parking, which would allow for more of the ground space to be used for the Supercenter as well as space for a few other smaller buildings. From the developers: Preliminary plans show a 220,200-square-foot store with more than 900 parking stalls underneath on two levels. The 11 1/2 acre site would include four additional shops totaling 18,800 square feet. The store would have about 400 workers. The property is currently zoned as Community Commercial. The city development code specifically states that "new buildings will be pedestrian-oriented with parking placed behind or beside buildings." This Wal-Mart Supercenter definitely does not meet that description. More information on the property, city codes, and the development process.

What we have to do
Please bear in mind folks, 400 people showing up at a meeting and shouting at their representatives will not deter them at all. We have to understand that this will be a battle that will need money, involvement, media support and any other asset we can imagine to help our cause. Do not expect much help from the neighborhood associations, as one of the leaders of the local one has already made comments supporting the design. It is really going to be a grassroots effort to try to convince this 900 lb. gorilla not to recline here. Remember, we need 40,000 not 400. Let me know how I can help
