Powell already getting ready for this monster of a store
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 09/29/2006 - 8:05am.
I have noticed that there seems to be a lot of activity of roads already being built up etc. on Powell... are you really telling me that none of that money has already come from Walmart?? Also, what I have found interesting is that right around the future store is all these poor rentals being built... customers automatically for Walmart? One more interesting note I see on Powell, you cannot get to any local businesses anymore easily because of all the supposed cement dividers with planters in the future??? Looks like another way for Walmart to have more customers. People don't want to hassle having to turn around to get to say Gresham Miller paint. People are not stupid. |

A few answers...
I can tell you a few things...
The work done to upgrade Powell and add the dividers was planned long before Wal-Mart looked at the property. The funding came from the state, as Powell is a state highway. Plans for the road were already complete and available for review at City Hall and online before Wal-Mart even showed an interest in the site.
Also, much of the rentals in the area were already here (I know-- I live in one). When those rentals hit a certain occupancy level, they started building more. It's been pretty popular all over the area for a while now-- pack in apartments and row houses in just about every space available. Developers are trying to spend the least amount of money, while yielding the most amount of profit.
It's more likely that Wal-Mart looked at what was already here or coming and decided they liked the area based on that.
