About MeI've had some people wonder who I am, why I'm doing this web site, etc. so I thought I'd do this page to let you know. I started this web site back in January, 2005 as soon as I heard that it looked like Wal-Mart was interested in the property at 182nd/Powell. This was weeks before any meetings were held or any community groups began to grow. I did the web site as a way for people to find out the information regarding what was being proposed, what the steps of the process were, an archive of news articles on the issue, etc. Since then I've regularly updated the site with information from the city, alerts to actions being taken by Gresham First (the official organization out here fighting against the Wal-Mart), news articles, and more. I'm in no way an organization fighting against the Wal-Mart. I belong to an organization that has been doing work in regards to Wal-Mart (Democracy for America/Democracy for Oregon which has been working with Wake Up Wal-Mart). However, I'm just a neighbor in Southwest Gresham who lives within walking distance of the propsed Wal-Mart. I drive every day on Powell Loop, the proposed entrance for the supercenter. I sit in the traffic at 182nd/Powell almost every day. I know what it's like to sit for 15 minutes waiting at the light to turn into Safeway (going north on Highland). I also know all the info and studies on Wal-Mart and what it does to a community. I come from Texas where Wal-Mart took over about 15 years ago. Now unless you can afford to shop at the mall, your options for clothes, toys, and school clothes are slim to none unless you live near a Target (KMart went out of business down there). There is no Costco-- only Sam's Club. I plan on fighting this Wal-Mart until they give up and leave Gresham alone. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Hope to hear from you soon! »
